Predicting seed yields under changing environmental conditions is a big challenge for seed producers, as it is dependent on many factors. A key factor for achieving high seed yields is sufficient pollination with good quality pollen. In this talk we discuss how pollen quality monitoring, from pollen collection to storage and pollination facilitates more accurate predictions of the seed set. This can be achieved by setting quality gates at different points in the pollen supply chain.
In addition, examples are discussed how seed producers can gain efficiency by characterize elite male lines, improve the female to male ratio, maximizing the daily breeding window and optimize manual pollination.
